Bear fruit worthy of repentance.
In the midst of John the Baptist's criticism of self interested religious leaders lies a spiritual gem. "Bear fruit worthy of repentance.” What kind of fruit would this be? Immediately, I think of grace, mercy, patience, and love. Repentance is not only regret and remorse, it is a request for another chance and a commitment to a new way of life. When we have "loved others as we would love ourselves," shown mercy and grace to people when they need it most, and have patience with people in their walk - we bear fruit. We bear fruit that is worthy of repentance. This is why we pray forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lord I want to bear fruit worthy of repentance. Create in me a clean heart. A heart that grants mercy and grace to those around me. Lord let me be a living testimony to your love for all. Let forgiveness and wisdom pour from my spirit to all those in need around me. Lord make me fruitful. In Jesus name!
