But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.
The children of Israel were constantly seeking a homeland free from oppression, war, famine, invasion, and exile. Much of their scriptural history is in one of these stages. The promised land even when acquired was not always a land of promise. They desired a better country, one that modeled and was governed by God. It was always human power structures internal and external that eroded the possibility for a better country. Selfishness, bigotry, and greed will always destroy a nation.
Our ancestors too desired and worked towards a better country. A country that is truly modeled after God's principles of liberation and justice. A country that loves God and loves people. Slavery, Jim crow, voting rights, and women's rights are now the norm because our predecessors desired better. Today all those things seem imminently under threat. We to like those before us must continue to work towards better. We can do this knowing God has prepared a city just for us.
Lord make this a better country. Give us the tenacity as you gave those before us to work towards a country that lives up to the principles it proclaims to represent. Make us steadfast and unmovable knowing you have already prepared a city for us. In Jesus name.
