Numbers 1:16 (NLT)
16 These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”
A year after Israel left Egypt God instructs Moses to survey the warriors. It was Moses’ task to identify those who were able, eligible, and ready to fight for the people. From that list God chose the leaders. These leaders lead the community, their tribes and their clans.
Leadership is not about prestige and recognition. It is about who is willing to fight for the people. Who is willing to go first on behalf of the community? Who is going to uphold and protect the traditions, the history, and identity of the people. It is important to note that these leaders did not chose themselves. God chose them.
Who are the chosen leaders of our communities, our cities, our state, and country, our people? Rep. John Lewis famously said, “We may not have chosen the time, but the time has chosen us.” This has never been more true. In a day and age where our people are being persecuted in ways we thought were behind us. In a time when our forward progression is fragile and our already achieved liberation is being threatened, we must fight. We must survey the people and identify the warriors. Who are God’s chosen leaders?
Lord we pray for our leaders. Those who you choose to lead anoint them with power and courage. Ordain them to lead us to the promised land.
