1 Peter 2:9 (NRSV)
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Peter declares us chosen. A people set apart to declare the mighty acts of God. This is a massive responsibility at first glance. Many of us believe that if we shout hallelujah enough, show up to church, and tithe we will be alright.
I believe that Peter is declaring just the opposite. Those that are chosen and in the royal priesthood are distinguishable by their relentless pursuit of proclaiming God’s power. The chosen testify through thought, word, and deed of God’s ability to lift people from darkness, depression, and oppression into light and liberation.
Nothing we do should be for our glory. If we are indeed chosen by God in all things our lives should say, “Glory be to God!”
Lord choose me to proclaim your mighty acts. Choose me to testify to your light and liberation.
