Hebrews 11:1-2 (NKJV)
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
The first verse of Hebrews 11 is one most of us know by heart. We pull it out in all of our discussions regarding "keeping the faith" and "holding on." The second verse is always left out even though it sets the framework for the next two chapters. Those who came before us have “obtained
a good testimony." They have left us something to strengthen our faith and our people.
It is in the stories and narratives of our ancestors that we can glean meaning and context for our own experience. African Americans have been left a rich cultural history and legacy of struggle and perseverance. Our elders overcame every challenge by holding on to their faith and making a difference anyway they could.
This month we give remembrance to our ancestors who by their faith in Jesus made things better for us. It is up to us to overcome our present struggles through our faith and make things a little better for the generations to come. It is up to us to “obtain a good testimony."
Lord give us a good testimony. Show us as a people the beauty of our history, how you brought us through, and how you keep promises to every generation. Develop in us an appreciation and a curiosity to seek out and learn about our unknown ancestors. Give us a passion to learn about our spiritual predecessors in scripture who paved the way for us. Lord when we have come to life's journey's end may those who come after us say, "they obtained a good testimony!” In Jesus Name!
