Exodus 31:1-6 (NLT)
1 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. 4 He is a master craftsman, expert in working with gold, silver, and bronze. 5 He is skilled in engraving and mounting gemstones and in carving wood. He is a master at every craft! 6 “And I have personally appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to be his assistant. Moreover, I have given special skill to all the gifted craftsmen so they can make all the things I have commanded you to make:
If it’s one thing Rosalee can tell you about me it’s that I have no skill with working with my hands. I have never been good at anything involving fixing, crafting, or building. It is a gift that I do not posses. My nephew Allen amazes me. Almost from birth he has been able to mentally, then actually, dissect, fix and put back together anything. It as if he was born to be an engineer, a craftsman, a builder, and a fixer.
What I love about this text is it shows us how God chooses certain people to have certain skills. In preparation for the ark of the covenant and the tabernacle, God choses Bezalel and Oholiab to build these Holy structures. Even physical structures have a spiritual component that can’t be ignored. God elects those who ought to build what God ordains.
Being chosen as a leader extends to all professions. When we look at the skills God has placed in us and we put those skills to use for kingdom building all of a sudden our jobs and carriers turn to ministries. Bezalel and Oholiab’s ministry was no less substantial and critical than Moses’. And my nephew Allen’s ministry, even at 16, is no less substantial than mine.
Lord we pray for all the builders today. The ones you have ordained and elected to build. The kingdom. The house of God. And everything it takes to make it work.
