Mark 3:13-15 (NRSV)
13 He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, and to have authority to cast out demons.
Jesus called many disciples to follow him. But he found it necessary to choose twelve to have a closer relationship with him, to preach, and cast out demons. As we know these twelve weren’t all necessarily chosen because of their bravery, loyalty, or skill. They may well have been chosen for how they would fail as much as how God would use them to succeed. Peter denied Jesus, Thomas doubts, Judas betrays, and the rest barely do anything remarkable enough to warrant mention.
Being chosen doesn’t mean we are better than anyone else. It just means we’re chosen. We are chosen for a specific task. Most importantly we are chosen to “be with him.” The twelve did not get recognition because they did anything so great. They were recognized because of who they represented. Jesus was the source of their power and mission. The mission is God’s therefore so is the glory.
Lord chose us to be close to you. Chose us to fulfill your mission.
