Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The picture the author of Hebrews has painted has been an amphitheater with all of the forerunners of our faith, cheering us on as we now run the race. We are given inspiration by their sacrifice, their accomplishments, and their struggles. We are given the ultimate inspiration in Jesus. The One that we ought to maintain our focus on who has indeed authored and directed this entire scene.
The end of this descriptive dialogue shows the consistency and ability of the writer. In a relay race you want your best runners at the beginning and the end. We have received the baton from our fore-parents and as we run we stay focused on the next runner. That runner is Jesus. Jesus is the finisher. When we run knowing Jesus is the finisher we know that even if we stumble or lose ground Jesus will ultimately make it all up.
Every ancestor along the way was not perfect. Every one did not have an amazing story of overcoming the odds. But each one had a story. A story that is valuable and necessary. As long as we the inheritors of our ancestors’ promises keep our eyes stayed on Jesus and pass him the baton, he will take us over the finish line.
Lord I praise you for being the finisher. I thank you for all those who have come before me. I praise you for all that was done so I can be free. I praise you because I can pass it on to you and you can bring it over the finish line. You are Alpha and Omega. The Author and the Finisher of our faith.
