John 3:30 (NRSV)
He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John the Baptist was chosen by God to lead people towards Jesus. He was a passionate and powerful prophet that Jesus celebrated as one of the greatest. What made John so powerful was his unshakeable understanding of his purpose. He knew he was to lead the way to Jesus, not be Jesus. When it was time for him to step away and Jesus step forward John did so without hesitation.
Many leaders today are chosen by God to point to Jesus. I fear that in the midst of popularity and abdication of prophetic voice far too often we want to be Jesus. Our work is never to get the glory but to always ascribe the glory to Jesus. This is not our work or our ministry. It does not belong to us. If Christ is not glorified we are failing. Jesus must increase therefore we must decrease.
Lord show us how to decrease so you may increase.
