Genesis 5:24 (NRSV)
Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him.
As we enter a new series and the season of Advent we look at the subject, “God is With Us.” We will preach, teach, meditate, and pray about the promise, proximity, and presence of God in our midst. Enoch here is the first to grace our meditation. It seems not even Adam had the relationship with God that Enoch did. He is the first in the scripture to be identified as someone who walked with God. Can you imagine what this must have been like for Enoch? The conversation. The wisdom. The living God disclosing the most intimate secrets and plans. It is no wonder that God took him. This level of “with-ness” surely separated Enoch from everyone else.
I think about when I started “walking with God.” Prior I had a circle of friends that were tighter than brothers. We had grown up together but we had also gone down some dangerous paths together. As I began to walk with God, God took me from them. In a real way I was no more. My friends felt betrayed. But as I got to know God and understand things I had not understood before I could no longer be in the same places. Surely I was not like Enoch. But surely in many ways I was. God walked with me; then I was no more, because God took me.
Lord walk with us, talk with us, and tell us that we are your own. In Jesus name!
