Numbers 27:16-17 (NIV)
16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
Moses knowing he had done all he could do for the people looked to God to appoint someone new. Moses now older and having reached his leadership capacity understood that a new leader was necessary to take the people to the next level. This selfless prayer requests demonstrates Moses’ love for the people. He did not let his pride obstruct the mission for the people. His desire was that the they would make it to the promised land and not be like sheep without a shepherd.
There has been much debate regarding how the Civil Rights Generation (Baby Boomers) have a hard time letting go. This statement of course is overly general and doesn’t take into account many individuals who mentored and groomed Generation X. But there are many examples of people who held on too long to the detriment of the people. Emerging leadership in some cases have been forced into leadership by sudden circumstance rather then mentoring and grooming.
The spirit of a servant leader is one who will put themselves last. Sometimes what is best for the people may not seem best for us. A wise and experienced leader shares their wisdom and prepares the next generation. I praise God for the mentors which took time with me. I have been blessed with dozens of people who have opened doors and poured into me. Particularly, I think of Bishop John Bryant, Rev. Dr. Leah Gaskin Fitchue, and Jerome Harris. These three leaders took on intentional, structured mentorship roles in my life that have shaped my theology and my ministry. We all need the power, the blessing, the wisdom, and instruction from our leaders if we ever intend to lead.
Lord I pray that everyone would find and be found by a mentor. Lord bless us by preparing us for leadership so we can all make it to the promised land. In Jesus Name!
