God blessed them, and God said to them," Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it…
From the very start of our scriptures God has looked for us to be fruitful. Here in strictly practical terms God is looking for humanity to reproduce and fill the earth. This Divine instruction becomes so engrained in human culture that women who were barren were looked down upon. Men who had no heirs considered themselves cursed. This oppressive and self imposed castigation was never the intent of God. God's intention consistently has been the fruitfulness of God's children.
In the ministry and work of Jesus he does not come and reproduce physically at all. But rather he teaches disciples how to be fisherman of people. Upon departure Jesus tells the disciples to go in to all the world and "make disciples." Paul teaches us that our spiritual growth is expressed by "the fruit or the spirit."
What happens in Genesis is far more than a mandate to have babies. It is God implanting in our very beings the desire to be fruitful. To do more than be stagnant. God wants us to do something great with the time, talent, and resources we have been blessed with.
Lord give me the desire to be fruitful at every stage of my life. Give me the passion to reach the lost and the broken and show them your love. Show me how to not just do the best I can with what I have, but to always strive to get better. Lord make me be fruitful. In Jesus Name.
