For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God.
The Apostle makes an interesting connection in his prayer and desire for the Colossian church. He prays they are "filled with the knowledge of God's will," so that they bear fruit which pleases God. Put simply bearing fruit is the tangible outgrowth of God's will in our lives. The more we know God the more fruitful we will be.
Rosalee often tells the story that during pre-marital counseling she was asked about Paul's word's that the woman should "obey" and “submit” to her husband. The same passage she pointed out says that the husband should be washing his wife clean in the word. “How can I submit to a husband I don't see in the word?” For the sake of time I will leave discussion around all the patriarchy and misogyny aside. But Rosalee asked a question that fundamentally changed my life. At that point I had no relationship or knowledge of God's will, God's word, or God's plan for my life. I had recently given my life to Christ. I was going to church. But I didn't really know God. It was then that I began a journey to soak in God's word. The more we are filled with knowledge of God, the more fruitful we will be.
Lord fill me with your knowledge and wisdom. Fill me with your will for my life. Lord fill and direct Bethel in your word and your presence that we might be fruitful. May our time in prayer meditation and worship lead to our growth in every way. In Jesus name.
Questions for Meditation
Am I on a pathway to grow in all spiritual wisdom?
Am I leading a life worthy of the Lord?
Where is the opportunity to bear fruit?
Now pray in your own words that God would fill you to be fruitful.
